COLUMBIA, S.C. – The South Carolina men’s soccer team picked up the Conference USA Sport Academic Award for 2012-13, which is given to the highest team GPA in each of the conference’s sponsored sports.
The Gamecocks posted a 3.54 team GPA in the last academic year, best in the nine-team men’s soccer league. This adds another honor for the program, as South Carolina ranked among the nation’s best according to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) in the fall.
Kevin Stam and Braeden Troyer earned 2012 C-USA All-Academic Team spots, while Troyer also garnered Capital One Academic All-District 4 accolades. A total of 25 earned spots on the C-USA Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll, with 10 of those taking academic medals for 3.75 cumulative GPA’s. Twenty-four men’s soccer student-athletes claimed spots on Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Rolls in the past year.
Head coach Mark Berson’s squad opens the 2013 season at home with an exhibition against Mercer at 7 p.m. on Sun., Aug. 18 at Stone Stadium.
