COLUMBIA, S.C. – The University of South Carolina women’s soccer team travels to College of Charleston on Tuesday for its lone exhibition contest of the 2013 campaign. Game time is set for 4 p.m. ET at the Patriots Point complex in Charleston.

South Carolina returns 20 letterwinners to the field this fall, including goalkeeper standout junior Sabrina D’Angelo and senior midfielder Danielle Au, who led the team with four goals and three assists for 11 points last season. The squad, which posted a 7-10-4 overall record last season, is led by Shelley Smith in her 13th campaign. Smith commented following a morning practice session on Monday that the team was ready for the challenge on Tuesday.

“The team has worked really hard during preseason, and has had good experience already with some 11 versus 11 in practice,” Smith said. “I think we are ready for this (Tuesday’s exhibition). It’s early in the preseason but we are ready to see where we’re at. It will help to start sorting out some positions for us and who is going to step up in games. It’s very competitive across the roster so it will be great to test everyone in a game situation. With the exhibition 10 days ahead of our opening game we will really be able to sort out some things after tomorrow’s test.”

Charleston joins the Colonial Athletic Association in 2013, and will play a very competitive schedule. The team, which posted a 7-12-1 overall record last season, is led by Cougar alum Christian Michner in his third campaign. Junior forward Sarah Cardamone and senior forward McCallie Jones both return to the field this fall after posting four goals apiece to lead Charleston last season.

Following Tuesday’s exhibition, South Carolina officially opens the 2013 campaign when it hosts UNC Wilmington on Aug. 23, at 7 p.m. at Stone Stadium.
