South Carolina in a Tie for Second Place after Round One of Cougar Classic

HANAHAN, S.C. –

With the 2013-14 season officially underway, the South Carolina women’s golf team is off to a strong start, as they are currently in second place after posting a 285 (-3) on Sunday in the first round of the Cougar Classic, hosted by the College of Charleston.

After day one at Yeamans Hall in Hanahan, S.C., Mississippi State is in first place with a total of 282 (-6). The Gamecocks are tied with Clemson in second place with a total of 285 (-3) and NC State and Wake Forrest are in a tie for fourth after each carding a 1-under 287.

Senior Samantha Swinehart led the way for the Garnet and Black turning in a 3-under 69 to end the day in a tie for fourth. Swinehart had the only ace of the day on hole no. 6 and also tallied two birdies and a bogey.

Sophomore Mary Fran Hillow and junior Justine Dreher also finished the round under par, each shooting a 1-under 71 and ending the day in a tie for tenth. Hillow recorded a pair of birdies and a bogey while Dreher, who competed as an individual, tallied five birdies.

Freshman Katelyn Dambaugh carded an even-par 72 to end the round in a tie for 19^th. After turning in a 3-over 39 on the front side, Dambaugh logged three birdies on the back nine to shoot a 3-under 33. She finished the day with four birdies and four bogeys.

Senior Suzie Lee ended the round in a tie for 26^th after shooting a 1-over 73. Lee bogeyed on the first hole to and recorded 17 straight pars, which was a round one high.

Sophomore Sarah Schmelzel, a SEC All-Freshman Team selection last season, turned in a 2-over 74 to end the round in a tie for 38^th. Schmelzel shot an even-par 36 on the front side while registering three birdies and five bogeys on the day.

NC State’s Brittany Marchand and Mississippi State’s Ally MacDonald are at the top of the individual leaderboard after each carding a 6-under 66.
