The South Carolina men’s soccer team (5-5-3, 2-1-1 C-USA) travels to Huntington, W.Va., for a C-USA match against Marshall (2-7-4, 0-2-1 C-USA) on Saturday. The teams are set for a 7 p.m. kickoff.

Head coach Mark Berson aims for his 450th victory at the University of South Carolina. He would be just the fourth Division I head coach to post 450 victories at one institution. On Nov. 1, 2011, Berson collected his 450th career win in a double overtime victory over No. 22 UCF in Orlando, Fla., becoming the eighth Division I coach all-time to reach the 450-win career milestone.

Head coach Mark Berson aims for his 450th victory at the University of South Carolina. He would be just the fourth Division I head coach to post 450 victories at one institution. On Nov. 1, 2011, Berson collected his 450th career win in a double overtime victory over No. 22 UCF in Orlando, Fla., becoming the eighth Division I coach all-time to reach the 450-win career milestone.
Freshman midfielder Kurtis Turner put the game-winning goal away in the 87th minute on Wednesday, Oct. 16, in a home conference match against FAU. The tally was Turner’s first career goal in the Garnet and Black. The Gamecocks also scored on a penalty kick from junior defender Braeden Troyer in the first half in the 2-1 victory.
In a road match against Kentucky on Sunday, Oct. 13, South Carolina collected one point in the C-USA race. The Gamecocks and Wildcats tied 0-0 after 110 minutes of action.
Junior defender Mahamoudou Kaba scored three goals in a one-week stretch. The defender is a force to be reckoned with on set pieces, scoring on two against Presbyterian in the mid-week non-conference finale and netting one against No. 23 Tulsa on Sunday. Sophomore midfielder Ryan Arambula assisted on two of the goals.
The Gamecocks surrendered a 1-0 lead to No. 23 Tulsa on Sunday, Oct. 6. The Golden Hurricane scored the game-winner with three seconds on the clock in the first overtime period of the match.
Freshman forward Eli Dent recorded his first career start and goal in the match against Presbyterian. Dent scored an unassisted tally in the 40th minute of the match.
The Gamecocks completed the 2013 non-conference slate with a 3-0-2 undefeated home record. Only three other teams in C-USA did the same, Florida Atlantic (4-0-0), No. 23 Tulsa (3-0-0) and Kentucky (2-0-0).
South Carolina’s first road win of the season could not have come at a better time. The Gamecocks scored two unanswered goals to defeat (RV) Charlotte 2-1 on Friday, Sept. 27. Junior defenders Mahamoudou Kaba and Braeden Troyer provided the offense. Troyer’s unassisted game-winner came off a rebound from a corner kick in the 81st minute. Prior to the Gamecocks’ two tallies, the 49ers had allowed just four goals over the course of their first seven matches of the season. Freshman keeper Marco Velez earned his first career win in the Garnet and Black.

Scouting Marshall
The Thundering Herd returns home after a three-game road stretch. After playing three ranked teams in their first 13 matches, Marshall has a record of 2-7-4 and are still looking for their first C-USA win (0-2-1). In the last three games away from home, the Thundering Herd posted a 0-4 loss at FIU, a 0-0 draw at FAU and a 0-5 shutout loss at Maryland.

Offensively, sophomore midfielder Jack Hopkins leads Marshall with six points on three goals. A pair of midfielders have also scored four points a piece in senior Zach Hunter on two goals and freshman Ben Holt on one tally and two assists. Junior keeper Danny Sellitti has posted three shutouts, 36 saves and has a 1.50 goals against average in 10 games this season.

Marshall leads the all-time series 5-3-0 and the teams. The teams split their last two meetings with Marshall taking last year’s conference tilt with a 2-1 score.

Bob Gray is in his 19th season as head coach at Marshall. This season, the Thundering Herd is playing in a new facility, the Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex.

Up Next for the Gamecocks
After the Marshall match, South Carolina passes the halfway mark of the C-USA season with just four games remaining in league play. On Saturday, Oct. 26, the Gamecocks host (RV) New Mexico at Stone Stadium. The conference tilt is scheduled for 7 p.m., with live stats and video available via GamecocksOnline.com.
