The South Carolina women’s golf team shot a 17-over 305 on Saturday at the Pete Dye Course at the Country Club of Landfall to finish in fourth place at the Landfall Tradition hosted by the University of North Carolina Wilmington. The Gamecocks finished the tournament with a three-round total of 904 (+40)
“The golf course played tough this week and it took a lot of patience and toughness,” said head coach Kalen Harris. “We hung tough the first two days and didn’t have the performance we hoped for in the final round. Katelyn [Dambaugh] had a solid tournament and Mary Fran [Hillow] played well for us in the final round. Overall we had a strong finish in a very good field this weekend.”
Alabama won the tournament with a score of 867 (+3). Duke and Clemson round out the top three with scores of 875 (+11) and 897 (+33), respectively.
Freshman Katelyn Dambaugh led the way for the Gamecocks earning her first career top-five finish as she tied for fourth place. Dambaugh shot a 3-over 75 in the third round to finish with a total score of 219 (+3) and recorded a team-best nine birdies
Sophomore Mary Fran Hillow turned in her fourth round of par or better this season with an even-par 72 in Sunday’s final round. The native of Orlando Florida finished in a tie for 27th place with a total score of 228 (+12) while tallying six birdies, three of which came in the third round.
Senior Samantha Swinehart concluded the tournament in a tie for 32nd place after shooting a third-round 79 (+7). Swinehart finished with a total score of 229 (+13) and five birdies.
Sarah Schmelzelfinished next on the leaderboard for the Garnet and Black in a tie for 41st place. The sophomore shot an 80 (+8) in the third round for a total score of 231 (+15).
After shooting a third-round 79 (+7), junior Justine Dreher finished in a tie for 74th place with a total score of 239 (+23).
Alabama’s Stephanie Meadow won the individual title with a score of 213 (-3). Yu Liu of Duke claimed second place with a 1-under 215 and Emma Talley of Alabama finished in third place with a 1-over 217. Along with Dambaugh, Laetitia Beck of Duke and Liz Nagel of Michigan State tied for fourth place with a score of 219 (+3).
The Gamecocks will now turn their attention to winter workouts as they prepare for the spring season, which will get underway with the Florida State Match Up in Tallahassee Fla. on Feb. 14.
