IRVING, Texas – South Carolina redshirt junior co-captain Stephen Anderson and junior defender Braeden Troyer have earned 2013 Conference USA All-Academic Team accolades, the league office announced on Wednesday. It is Anderson’s first selection and Troyer’s second-straight honor. Both student-athletes boast 4.0 GPA’s in their respective majors.
Anderson has started all 18 games this season in the midfield for the Gamecocks as he has posted his finest season in the Garnet and Black. A superior student, Anderson has a 4.0 GPA as a psychology major. Anderson has two assists on the season, including one in the 4-3 upset road win at then-No.10 UAB. The Gamecock was a major part of the furious comeback when he contributed to Jeffrey Torda’s goal to equalize at 3-3 in the 86th minute. He also recorded an assist in a 5-2 non-conference win over High Point.
Troyer continues to garner awards as he was named to the all-conference team for the third-consecutive season earlier this week and was also selected to his second-straight Capital One Academic All-District 4 team earlier this month. The defender maintains a 4.0 GPA as a mathematics major. Playing nearly every minute of his career, Troyer made the move from midfielder to central defender this season. He has scored two goals this season, both in league play. The first was the game-winner at Charlotte in the C-USA opener. The Gamecock later scored on a penalty kick in a 2-1 win over FAU. Troyer has played an integral part of South Carolina’s six shutouts this season.
South Carolina along with Charlotte, New Mexico and Kentucky led the way with two representatives each. Troyer was one of three repeat selections on the 11-man team.
The Gamecocks face Tulsa in the quarterfinals of the C-USA Tournament in Charlotte, N.C., at 3 p.m. today.
