COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina freshman guard Jaylen Shaw has been named AgSouth Athlete of the Week.

Shaw had a breakout game in an 84-72 victory for South Carolina over visiting Florida International on Sunday, as the rookie guard hit 6-of-10 attempts from the field, including 4-of-7 from 3-point range, while dishing five assists and adding 16 points in the victory. The Gamecocks trailed at halftime against the Panthers, but Shaw propelled a solid effort in the second half, as the Gamecocks posted 45 points in the second stanza for the victory versus head coach Frank Martin’s alma mater. Shaw hit three 3s in the opening half, sparking the Gamecock offense off the bench. His five assists added to the Gamecocks’ season high of 19 helpers in the contest. Prior to Sunday’s game, Shaw had played just four minutes all season.
