Charles Waddell Honored As one of "100 to Remember"

University of South Carolina Deputy Athletics Director Charles Waddell will be honored this weekend at the Embassy Suites in Cary, N.C. in a year-end gala reception as part of the celebration of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s “100 To Remember” series.
Waddell is on the list of “100 To Remember: Male Athletes,” which features the top 100 male athletes in NCHSAA history. A special committee, including school administrators and coaches from across the state as well as sports media, put together the list in a series of meetings.
“Coming up with a list of `100 To Remember’ was a tremendous challenge,” said Davis Whitfield, commissioner of the NCHSAA. “So many individuals have participated, coached or been involved with the rich history and tradition of the first 100 years of the NCHSAA. This group of distinguished individuals not only served their schools, school systems and communities in an exceptional fashion, but our Association as well.”

Charles Waddell, Pinecrest
Superlative multi-sport athlete at Pinecrest who is the last three-sport letterman at the University of North Carolina, earning letters in football, track and basketball… all-ACC in football and was Sporting News All-American with 41 catches for 571 yards…won prestigious Patterson Medal at UNC in 1975, highest athletic award school offers…played in NFL for Bucs, Seahawks and Chargers but was injured… worked with Richardson Sports for 10 years, working on advertising and sponsorships for Carolina Panthers…joined South Carolina staff as associate athletic director in 2006.
During the 2013 year in which the 100th anniversary is celebrated by the NCHSAA, four “100 To Remember” lists have been released. The first involved administrators, including athletic directors, principals, superintendents or others involved with the administration of athletics at a local or statewide level. The second list was coaches, followed by female athletes. The male athletes list was the final one released.
Former South Carolina athletics director Mike McGee also made the list of male athletes, which includes the likes of Walter Davis, Carl Eller, Phil Ford, Roman Gabriel, Jim “Catfish” Hunter, Michael Jordan, Sonny Jurgensen, Meadowlark Lemon, Danny Manning, “Pistol” Pete Maravich, Julius Peppers, Gaylord Perry, David Thompson, Dominique Wilkins and James Worthy among others.
