Men's Hoops At Ole Miss For Saturday Matinee

COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina travels to Ole Miss for the second matchup between the two schools this season. The Rebels posted a 75-74 victory over the Gamecocks just two weeks ago in Columbia. Saturday’s game will be broadcast on SEC TV.

Coaches Across The Country Raising Awareness For Autism
Coach Martin is one of nearly 100 men’s basketball coaches throughout the country that will be wearing the “Autism Speaks” pin on his suit jacket Saturday vs. Ole Miss. Towson’s Pat Skerry and Marshall’s Tom Herrion, each who have sons on the autism spectrum, have started a nationwide campaign to raise awareness about this disease.

Carolina Quick Hits
– South Carolina is in its 106th season of basketball.
– The Gamecocks are led by Frank Martin in his second year. Matt Figger is the associate head coach, and Perry Clark and Lamont Evans are assistant coaches. Andy Assaley is in his second year as the director of operations for the Gamecocks.
– The Gamecocks are in their 23rd season of competition in the Southeastern Conference in 2014. Carolina owns a 134-227 (.371) all-time record in SEC play.
– Frank Martin owns a 55-52 (.567) all-time record in conference play.
– The Gamecocks earned their first conference win of the season on Wednesday in an 80-52 win over Texas A&M, after holding a 20-point halftime lead. Freshman guards Duane Notice and Sindarius Thornwell paced the Gamecocks with 19 points, four rebounds and three assists apiece.
– Carolina’s defense held the Aggies to 35.6 percent shooting from the field, and did not a allow a double-digit scorer for the first time this season.
– It was announced on Jan. 16 that junior guard Tyrone Johnson suffered a right foot fracture in the Jan. 15 game at Texas A&M, which required surgery. Johnson is out indefinitely. The Plainfield, N.J., native has played in 16 contests this season for Carolina, averaging 11.2 points and a team best 3.4 assists per game. He tallied 11 double-figure scoring games and 11 games with at least three assists prior to his injury.
– After hitting 11-of-11 from the free throw line last week combined at Georgia and Missouri, senior guard Brenton Williams continues to lead the nation in free throw percentage at 98.3 percent (59-of-60/Jan. 27). After going 6-of-8 on Wednesday, Williams has hit 66-of-63 (95.5 percent) for the season.
– In this season’s first meeting vs. Ole Miss, the Gamecocks held a 10-point lead at halftime, but the Rebels came back to out-score the Gamecocks 48-37 in the second half and claim a 75-74 win last Saturday at Colonial Life Arena. Freshman guard Sindarius Thornwell posted the first double-double of his career with teams highs of 24 points and 11 rebounds in the game. Senior guard Brenton Williams did not hit a basket in the contest, but was a perfect 9-of-9 from the free throw line, including making three from the line with just six seconds to play to pull the Gamecocks within one of the Rebels at the time.
– Senior guard Brenton Williams posted the second 30-point game of his career last Saturday at Missouri, hitting a career high seven 3s, while adding a perfect 9-of-9 mark from the free throw line. Williams scored 22 of those points and hit five 3s in the second half.

Scouting Ole Miss
The Rebels enter Wednesday’s matchup with a 14-6 overall record, which includes a 5-2 mark in SEC games … Ole Miss, however, lost its last league contest at Tennessee on Wednesday … The squad is led by head coach Andy Kennedy in his eighth season … Senior guard Marshall Henderson paces the squad with 19.1 points per game, which is second in the SEC … Henderson leads the SEC and ranks third in the nation with 4.41 3-pointers per game … Junior guard Jarvis Summers ranks eighth in the league with 17.9 points per game, 8.8 points above his average a season ago … Summers also ranks third in assists with 3.7 per game … The Rebels’ 137 blocked shots this season leads the SEC and ranks third in the nation at 6.9 per game.

Ole Miss Series
Saturday’s meeting vs. Ole Miss marks 32nd all-time meeting between the two schools. The Rebels won the last meeting, 75-74, on Jan. 18, 2014, at Colonial Life Arena to take a one-game lead in the series (16-15).

2 – Freshman gaurds Duane Notice and Sindarius Thornwell each had identical numbers in points (19), rebounds (4) and assists (3) vs. Texas A&M.
