Thornwell Named SEC Freshman of the Week

Feb. 17, 2014

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – South Carolina freshman guard Sindarius Thornwell has been named SEC Freshman of the Week after averaging 20.5 points, five rebounds and five assists as he led the Gamecocks to back-to-back wins against Vanderbilt and Alabama last week. It marked the first time since January 2011 that Carolina has won consecutive conference games. This is Thornwell’s second-career Player of the Week honor.

The Lancaster, S.C. native shot 48 percent (12-25) from the field last week, and 83 percent (15-18) from the foul line. Against Alabama, Thornwell was clutch for the Gamecocks down the stretch, scoring or assisting on 15 of Carolina’s final 17 points in the 67-66 win. With 22 points, he recorded his fifth 20-point performance of the season in conference games, matching Gamecock legend B.J. McKie’s total during the 1996 season when he won SEC Freshman of the Year. In conference games, he currently leads all SEC freshmen in points (17.3), assists (4.08) and steals (1.33) per game.

The Gamecocks will hit the road this week as they travel to Arkansas for a clash with the Razorbacks on Wednesday night. Tipoff is scheduled for 9 p.m. ET, and will broadcast on CSS with Matt Stewart and Barry Booker on the call.
