Schafer Earns SEC Freshman of the Week Honors

Feb. 26, 2014

COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina’s Andrew Schafer (Hilton Head Island, S.C./Hilton Head Prep) was named SEC Freshman of the Week, the league office announced today. It is his second recognition from the league this season and comes after his role in a pair of Gamecock victories last weekend.

A solid performer all season with a 17-6 overall record, Schafer delivered key results last week. Adding two more to his collection, he remained perfect in three-set matches this season improving to 6-0. In his match against USF, Schafer fought back from being down 4-6 in his first set to win the next two 6-1, 6-3. Against San Diego, the freshman was the last match on court with the teams tied 3-3. Schafer had won the first set but dropped the second in a tiebreak. With the weight of team outcome on his shoulders, he did not flinch, defeating Aaron Addison in the final set to clinch the team victory for the third time this season.

No. 33 South Carolina travels to College Station, Texas as it opens SEC play against No. 13 Texas A&M on Sun., Mar. 2, at 1 p.m. (ET).
