March 6, 2014

COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina sophomore Tiffany Mitchell (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day) is one of 15 student-athletes to earn a spot on the John. R. Wooden Award Women’s Ballot, The Los Angeles Athletic Club announced today. Selected by the Wooden Award National Advisory Board, all 15 on the ballot are eligible for college basketball’s most prestigious honor. Mitchell is also on the Wade Trophy and Dawn Staley Award Watch Lists.

One of the most versatile players in the Southeastern Conference, Mitchell became just the second sophomore to earn the league’s Player of the Year award from the coaches earlier this week. She leads the Gamecocks in scoring (15.5 ppg), assists (3.5 apg) and steals (2.1 spg). In conference action, she is the only player in the SEC to earn a spot among the league’s rankings in scoring (ninth), rebounding (16th), assists (11th) and steals (seventh). Improving her efficiency, Mitchell is shooting 52.0 percent from the field, including 52.4 percent from 3-point range. She has scored in double figures in all but three games this season and was the team’s top scorer 12 times, including eight SEC games.

Created in 1976, the John R. Wooden Award is the most prestigious individual honor in college basketball. It is bestowed upon the nation’s best player at an institution of higher education who has proven to his or her university that he or she is making progress toward graduation and maintaining a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA. Since its inception, the John R. Wooden Award has contributed close to a million dollars to universities’ general scholarship fund in the names of the All American recipients

Mitchell and the No. 5/6 Gamecocks open play in the 2014 SEC Tournament in Duluth, Ga., on Fri., Mar. 7, at noon against the winner of Thursday’s Georgia/Vanderbilt game. Friday’s game will air live on SportSouth.
