Gamecocks Third Through Two Rounds at Palmetto Intercollegiate

AIKEN, S.C. — The South Carolina men’s golf team moved into contention at the Palmetto Intercollegiate on Monday, shooting rounds of 289 (+9) and 290 (+10) in the Palmetto Intercollegiate at Palmetto Golf Club.

The Gamecocks will head into Tuesday’s final round in third place with a total of 579 (+19) and trail tournament leader Clemson (571) by eight stokes. Virginia is in second place with a two-round total of 577 (+17).

Sophomore Will Starke carded rounds of 70 (E) and 71 (+1) to lead the Gamecocks, who are playing for their fifth-straight top-three finish. Starke is in a tie for second with a total of 141 (+1) and is three shots back of Clemson’s Austin Langdale, who leads the tournament with a total of 138 (-2).

Sophomore Matt NeSmith finished the day in a tie for 20th with a total of 146 (+6) after shooting rounds of 72 (+2) and 74 (+4).

Juniors Caleb Sturgeon and Will Murphy are in a tie for 33rd at 148 (+8). Sturgeon posted consecutive rounds of 74 (+4), while Murphy turned in a 73 (+3) and a 75 (+5).

Rounding out the Gamecocks’ lineup, junior Blaine Woodruff shot rounds of 79 (+9) and 71 (+1) to wrap up the afternoon in a tie for 47th with a total of 150 (+10).

Georgia State (585) and Wofford College (585) round out the top five in a tie for fourth.

Final-round play is scheduled to begin on Tuesday at 9 a.m. Live scoring will not be available.
