Gamecocks Claim Third at Palmetto Intercollegiate

AIKEN, S.C. — The South Carolina men’s golf team shot a final-round 288 (+8) to claim third place at the Palmetto Intercollegiate on Tuesday at the Palmetto Golf Club.

The Gamecocks wrapped up the two-day event with a total of 867 (+27) to earn its fifth-consecutive top-three finish, marking the most by a Gamecock team since finishing third or better in six straight events during the spring schedule of 1999. Carolina has never finished worse than third at the event in five all-time appearances.

Sophomore Will Starke led the way for the Gamecocks as he carded a final-round 73 (+3) to finish tied for fifth with a total of 214 (+4), his third top-five finish of the season.

Sophomore Matt NeSmith earned his 13th career top-20 finish, wrapping up the event in a tie for 20th with a total of 217 (+7) after shooting a final-round 71 (+1).

Juniors Will Murphy and Caleb Sturgeon just missed out on top-20 finishes as they tied for 23rd with a total of 220 (+10). Both Murphy and Sturgeon posted a 2-over 72 on Tuesday.

Junior Blaine Woodruff rounded out the Gamecock lineup, finishing in a tie for 47th with a total of 225 (+15). Woodruff turned in a 5-over 75 in the final round.

Clemson won the team title with a total of 854 (+14), followed by Virginia (856), the Gamecocks, Georgia State (874) and Chattanooga (875). Clemson’s Austin Langdale won medalist honors with a total of 210 (E).

The Gamecocks will be back in action on March 16-17 at the Seahawk Intercollegiate. The 54-hole event will be held at the Country Club of Landfall in Wilmington, N.C.
