The Back Nine with Gamecock Junior Sean Kelly

March 18, 2014

Throughout the spring, Gamecocksonline.com will catch up with each member of the men’s golf team for a feature called The Back Nine, focusing on nine golf-related questions. This week we are featuring junior Sean Kelly.

When did you first start playing golf and what drew you to the game?
I first started playing golf when I about 5 years old. My older brother had started the game a couple years before, and I followed his lead. Driving the cart was also an integral part of my decision to pursue golf.

Who is your favorite professional golfer?
I’m a big fan of Phil Mickelson because he’s one of the most personable people I’ve ever met. He always does the right thing in regards to the fans and is a great ambassador for the game.

What is your favorite golf course that you’ve played?
My favorite course is Baltusrol Golf Club. There’s so much history associated with the club, and the members are some of the most accommodating of anywhere I’ve been. It’s a great experience even though you have to go to New Jersey.

What is your favorite golf memory?
My favorite memory on the golf course is meeting Phil Mickelson at the PGA Championship at Baltusrol.

What is the most memorable competition moment of your career?
My most memorable competition moment is when I birdied the last three holes to qualify for the 2010 U.S Amateur. It was great to come through when it mattered most.

Who has influenced you most in your golf career?
My dad has influenced my golf career the most. He doesn’t play but he has made my career possible both financially and logistically. I would have never been given the opportunities that I have without him.

What are you most known for in golf/your strong suit?
I’m most known for ball striking, but after having LASIK surgery I think my putting is becoming the strongest part of my game.

What is your dream foursome and what golf course would you play?
My dream foursome would include Larry David, JFK, and Derek Jeter at Baltusrol.

What’s in your golf bag?
Ping I20 driver
G20 3 wood
I20 hybrid
S56 irons
Anser wedges and putter
Pro v1x
