March 19, 2014
COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina sophomore Will Starke has been named the SEC Men’s Golfer of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday.
Starke earns the honor after claiming medalist honors with a total of 137 (-7) and leading the team to its third win of the season at the Seahawk Intercollegiate. His total of 137 is the fifth-lowest 36-hole total in school history, and it included an opening-round 64, which is tied for the third lowest round in school history. As a team, the Gamecocks score of 560 (-16) is the third best 36-hole total in school history. The win also gave Starke and the Gamecocks their sixth-straight finish of third or better, matching the 1998-99 team’s streak of six-straight top-three finishes for the best stretch in school history.
On the season, Starke ranks second on the team with a stroke average of 72.55 and has four top-five finishes.
The Gamecocks will return to tournament play on March 23-25 at the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate. The 54-hole event will be held at Bulls Bay Golf Club in Awendaw, S.C.
