Tiffany Mitchell Named WBCA All-America
April 5, 2014
NASHVILLE – South Carolina sophomore guard Tiffany Mitchell added another All-America award to her collection today as the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) announced her as part of its 10-member team at a ceremony today at Bridgestone Arena during the NCAA Women’s Final Four Super Saturday festivities. It is the first time the organization has recognized a Gamecock on its All-America team. Overall, she is the program’s 13th All-American, the last being Jocelyn Penn in 2003 as bestowed by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association and Associated Press. Mitchell is the only SEC member on the list and one of just three sophomores to earn the honors.
Mitchell’s resume includes Third-Team All-America status from the Associated Press in addition to the awards voted by the SEC coaches – SEC Player of the Year, First-Team All-SEC and SEC All-Defensive Team. The Gamecocks’ leading scorer, she ranked 10th in the SEC with 15.5 points per game while also holding 11th place in assists (3.5 apg) and seventh in steals (1.8 spg) as she proved to be one of the most versatile players in the conference. Mitchell was a finalist for the Wade Trophy and the Dawn Staley Award as well. Mitchell’s 157 free throws made this season tied the school record, originally set by Martha Parker in 1987-88, and the Charlotte, N.C., native’s 79.3 percent free throw accuracy is fourth-best in school history. Mitchell finished the season with 31 games of double-digit scoring and was the team’s top scorer 13 times.
South Carolina’s season was highlighted by the program’s first SEC regular-season championship and first NCAA Tournament No. 1 seed. En route to its second NCAA Sweet 16 appearance in the last three seasons, South Carolina’s 29 victories were just one shy of the school-record 30 set by the 1979-80 squad. The Gamecocks return 11 of their 12 players from this season and add the fourth-ranked recruiting class in the nation for 2014-15.
