Gamecocks Finish in Second Place at the SEC Championship

April 20, 2014

The sixth-ranked South Carolina women’s golf team shot a 2-over 290 on Sunday at Greystone Golf and Country Club to finish in second place at the SEC Championship. The Gamecocks concluded the tournament with a three-round score of 890 (+26).

“The team really battled today,” said head coach Kalen Harris. “To finish two over as a team is a phenomenal score and I’m really proud of the way they battled back. Our round today was Gamecock golf. To have the deficit we started the day with and come back and finish second was really remarkable and I’m very proud of them. This will be good momentum going into NCAA Regionals.”

Vanderbilt claimed first place with a total score of 879 (+14). Arkansas finished two strokes behind South Carolina to take third place.

Junior Justine Dreher carded the low round of the day for the Garnet and Black with a 1-under 71. Dreher concluded the tournament with a total score of 218 (+2) and earned her first top-five finish of the year as she claimed fourth place.

Sarah Schmelzel finished next on the individual leaderboard in a tie for tenth place, which is her second top-10 finish of the year. The sophomore fired a 1-over 73 in the final round and finished with a total score of 222 (+6).

Freshman Katelyn Dambaugh climbed ten spots up the individual leaderboard to finish the tournament in a tie for 14th place. Dambaugh shot a 1-over 73 in the third round to finish with a total score of 224 (+8).

Seniors Suzie Lee and Samantha Swinehart finished in a tie 35th and 40th place, respectively. Lee carded a 77 (+5) in the final round, giving her a total score of 230 (+14) while Swinehart shot a third-round 1-over 73 for a total score of 231 (+15).
