BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Soccer player Stephen Anderson and soccer player Danielle Au have been nominated for the H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship by the University of South Carolina.

The H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship has been presented by the Southeastern Conference since 1986 to the league’s top male and female scholar-athletes.

The Southeastern Conference will name the 2014 recipients of the H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship on May 6.

Highlights of South Carolina’s nominees include:

Stephen Anderson, Soccer

  • An Experimental Psychology major who graduated in December 2013
  • Started all 19 contests senior season and saw action in 31 of 38 career contests
  • Selected as team captain
  • Member of 2010 Conference-USA regular season and 2011 C-USA tournament championship teams
  • Boasts a 3.984 GPA
  • Named to the President’s List for posting a 4.0 GPA seven times while a student-athlete at South Carolina
  • Named to C-USA All-Academic Team in 2013
  • Frequent member of the SEC and C-USA Academic Honor Rolls
  • As his honors thesis, he wrote a riddle book for community youth education
  • Member of Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and chair of the community outreach committee
  • Volunteer and event organizer at the Ronald McDonald House of Columbia, SC
  • Plans to become a sports psychologist after spending a year teaching English to children in Budapest, Hungary

Danielle Au, Soccer

  • Majored in International Business, Entrepreneurship and Economics and graduated in December 2013
  • Boasts a 3.9 GPA, while minoring in Chinese and Statistics
  • Two-time selection to the Capital One Academic All-District IV Team
  • Selected to the Capital One Academic All-America Third Team during the fall
  • Member of both the Dean’s List and President’s List
  • Earned the Woodrow Scholarship, Beyond Boundaries Award and is a Magellan Scholar
  • Selected to the NSCAA All South Region Third Team her senior season
  • Member of the program’s first SEC regular-season Championship in 2011 and named to the conference’s All-Freshman Team that year
  • Finished her career fourth all-time in goals (23) and points (59) in South Carolina history
  • Played in 92 matches during career, third-most in school history, and made 87 starts
  • Served as president of the Golden Key Honor Society in which she organized over 1,100 members to enhance the society’s three pillars: service, leadership and academic

Each year, the SEC, in conjunction with AT&T, an SEC Corporate Champion sponsor, provides the league’s male and female McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship recipients with a $15,000 post-graduate scholarship. The 26 remaining male and female finalists for the award will also receive a $7,500 post-graduate scholarship.

The award recipients are chosen by a committee of Faculty Athletics Representatives from the 14 SEC institutions and are honored at the SEC Spring Meetings in Sandestin, Fla., in late May.

Last year’s McWhorter Award recipients were Barrett Jones of the Alabama football team and Chelsea Oswald of the Kentucky track & field team.
