NeSmith Earns Second-Team All-SEC Honors

May 8, 2014

COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina sophomore golfer Matt NeSmith has been named Second Team All-SEC as selected by the league’s 14 head coaches, the conference office announced Thursday.

The selection marks the second-straight year NeSmith has received an accolade from the SEC after being named Co-SEC Freshman of the Year and being selected to the All-Freshman Team last year.

A native of North Augusta, S.C., NeSmith is having one of the most successful seasons for an individual in school history. He leads the team and ranks 13th in the SEC with a stroke average of 71.66, which is currently the second lowest single-season average in program history. He has produced a team-high seven top-20 finishes, and his four top-five showings are tied for the fifth most in a single season at South Carolina.

NeSmith and the Gamecocks will look to earn their second consecutive trip to the NCAA Championship next week at the NCAA Eugene Regional in Eugene, Ore, on May 15-17. The top five teams from the regional will advance to the NCAA Championship, which will be held on May 23-28 at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan.
