COLUMBIA, S.C. – University of South Carolina hunt seat coach Carol Gwin has been named the head coach at SMU, it was announced late yesterday. Gwin takes over a Mustang program that went 5-10 last year.

Gwin becomes SMU’s third head coach in the last 12 months.

“We are sad to see Carol go but we’re excited for her with this new opportunity and certainly wish her all the best,” South Carolina head coach Boo Major said. “The search for our new assistant hunt seat coach has already started, and I am looking forward to this new chapter for Gamecock equestrian.”

In her four years at South Carolina, the Gamecocks’ hunt seat team went 51-19, including a perfect 18-0 mark this past season. Carolina’s equitation over fences team, the group that Gwin was responsible for coaching, went 50-20 during that span.

“As excited as I am to be moving on to a great opportunity at SMU, I’m going to miss all of the wonderful people I’ve gotten to know over the last four years at South Carolina,” Gwin said. “I want to thank Boo and Ruth for bringing me here four years ago to an amazing program and allowing me to join them for this wonderful ride. I also want to thank the wonderful young women I’ve gotten to coach and I hope they know how proud I am of them for all of the accomplishments we’ve been a part of, including the first ever back-to-back SEC Championships in school history.”

A national search for Gwin’s replacement is underway.
