COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina incoming freshman guard/forward Shamiek Sheppard sat down with GamecocksOnline.com this week for our web series, “Starting Five With Shamiek Sheppard.” The series will highlight a different member of the Gamecock men’s basketball team with each edition. Sheppard, a native of Brooklyn, N.Y., an all-state and all-region team honoree during his prep career, spoke about why he decided to attend school and play basketball for the Gamecocks and his favorite NYC eatery.
Q: Why did you choose to attend and play basketball for South Carolina and Coach Martin?
A: Frank Martin and the entire coaching staff really stood out to me. When I visited, the fan base was so into the sporting events and I loved the support.
Q: If you could use three words to describe your style of play, what would they be and why?
A: Athletic, because I can finish around the rim; tough, because I don’t let anyone push me around on the court; and transition, because I love to run.
Q: Do you model your game after a particular professional player?
A: I play like Andre Iguodala. I like to play defense and get out in transition, and I like to play with my team.
Q: What type of mindset do you bring to the team this season?
A: The type of mindset that I bring to the team is toughness. I have a leadership mindset as well and I’m very vocal when I’m playing.
Q: What is your favorite place to eat in New York City?
A: The local pizza shop near my house in Brooklyn, Pizzeria.
