COLUMBIA, S.C. – Members of the South Carolina men’s basketball team spent Wednesday afternoon at the Richland County Sheriff Department’s Stars of Tomorrow Summer Camp, which is held for kids during the summer at elementary schools throughout the county. The community outreach is part of the “8K In 8 Days” campaign for Gamecock men’s basketball.

Sophomore guard Sindarius Thornwell, along with junior forwards Michael Carrera and Laimonas Chatkevicius, spent time with the camp attendees teaching them fundamentals of basketball, such as dribbling and free throw shooting. The group posed for a team photo at the end of the event and team members signed autographs for the crowd.

Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott was in attendance, and spoke about what it means to the camp members to have Gamecock men’s basketball visit.

“The fact that coach Martin and the basketball team cares about kids speaks volumes about him and the players,” Lott said. “To come out and spend time with us when they don’t have to means a lot. These kids worship these basketball players. They worship coach Martin. They all know who the coach of the basketball team is and the players, so to have them come out and spend time with them means the world to them because they would probably never get that opportunity to go to them, to go to the basketball team. To have the basketball team come out to them to me speaks volumes to the character and integrity and caring that coach Martin and the basketball team have.”

Thornwell also spoke about the event and what it means to the basketball team to be out and about in the community during the “8K In 8 Days” campaign.

“It’s very fun to get out into the community and meet people,” Thornwell said. “It’s great to let the community see who we are and to get to know everyone.

“This event was really fun. The opportunity to work with the kids and the Richland County Sheriff’s Department was great.”

Deputy Hill with the RCSD, who has led the Stars of Tomorrow Camps for nine years, spoke about the impact that the Gamecock men’s basketball players had on the campers today.

“It means a lot to our campers to have the men’s basketball players at our event today,” Hill commented. “So many of our students don’t have the opportunity to attend the games unless we take them.”

Season ticket prices for the upcoming season remain unchanged from the 2013-14 campaign, with full season packages starting at $90. Like last season, fans can purchase lower level season tickets for $260 (Gamecock Club membership required for sections 104-106, 113-115) and University faculty and staff can buy tickets for $210. The Coke Family Section is available for $600 (four tickets). Upper level tickets are available for $200 (no Gamecock Club membership required) and faculty and staff can purchase tickets in the upper bowl for $160. End zone seating in the upper level is priced at four seats for $360.

Gamecock fans who have already renewed their season tickets for the 2014-15 campaign and those fans who purchase new or renew their season tickets during the “8K In 8 Days” campaign, are eligible to win a prize each day of the initiative. Prizes include a game-worn jersey, an autographed basketball, a $100 gift card to Garnet and Black Traditions, and the grand prize, a VIP trip with the team for an away game to an exciting destination.
