COLUMBIA, S.C. – The South Carolina men’s basketball team, along with head coach Frank Martin, spent time at Fort Jackson in Columbia today, holding an event for children at the Solomon Center. The community outreach is part of the “8K In 8 Days” campaign for Gamecock men’s basketball.
The event opened with Major General Bradley Becker, the Fort Jackson Commanding General, addressing the crowd and introducing Martin. The team members were next introduced before Major General Becker presented Coach Martin with a gift.
The over 250 children in attendance next split into groups and learned fundamentals of basketball, such as dribbling, stretching, lay-ups and more drills, with team members leadings the groups.
Coach Martin spoke about why today’s event was so important to him and his team.
“Today’s event impacts two groups of people, it impacts kids and members of our military,” Martin said. “Getting our players and staff involved in the lives of young people is a big responsibility to us and also to come out and assist the military any way we can.
“Any time we can put our players in front of young kids, they realize just how impactful they are to those young people. It continues to give them a sense of responsibility for how they act and how they conduct themselves.”
