Murphy's 73 Low Gamecock Score on First Day of US Amateur

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Of the three Gamecocks competing this week at the 114th U.S. Amateur Championship, senior Will Murphy posted the lowest score in the first round of stroke play on Monday, shooting a 2-over 73 at the Atlanta Athletic Club’s Highlands Course.
A native of Columbia, S.C., Murphy finished the day in a tie for 105th with one round of stroke play remaining before the field is cut to the low 64 scorers for match play.
South Carolina senior Caleb Sturgeon carded a 3-over 74 on the Highlands Course, and junior Matt NeSmith turned in a 3-over 75 on the Riverside Course. Both golfers will head into Tuesday in a tie for 133rd.
Sam Horsfield, Jimmy Beck and Taylor Moore are tied for the lead at 6-under. Horsfield and Moore both shot a 66 on the Riverside Course, while Beck shot 65 on the Highlands Course.
Murphy will be the first Gamecock to start the final round of stroke play on Tuesday as he is set to tee off at 8:05 a.m. on the Riverside Course. NeSmith will begin play at 8:10 on the Highlands Course, while Sturgeon will tee it up at 1:40 p.m. on the Riverside Course. Live scoring will be available at usga.org.
