COLUMBIA, S.C. — Former South Carolina men’s golfer Mark Silvers shared medalist honors at a qualifier on Monday at Brunswick Country Club in Brunswick, Ga., to earn a spot in this week’s PGA Tour McGladrey Classic.
Silvers fired a 6-under 64 to tie for first with Justin Lower to claim one of four qualifying spots. The McGladrey Classic will be contested Thursday through Sunday at Sea Island Golf Club’s Seaside Course in Sea Island, Ga., the site of the SEC Men’s Golf Championship. Silvers won’t be the only Gamecock in the field this week, as former Carolina All-American Mark Anderson will be playing as well.
A native of Savannah, Ga., Silvers was a Golf Coaches Association of America Honorable Mention All-America selection and a second-team All-SEC selection as a senior in 2009. He was also named the 2009 SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year. As a senior, Silvers recorded eight top-10 finishes, including four top fives and a tie for 18th showing at the NCAA Championship.
The McGladrey Classic will be Silvers’ fifth career PGA Tour event. He qualified for the U.S. Open in 2010. He played in The Greenbrier Classic and the Sanderson Farms Championship in 2013 and played in The Honda Classic in 2014. The Golf Channel will provide television coverage for all four rounds.
