Thornwell Named Preseason Second Team All-SEC

Birmingham, Ala. – The Southeastern Conference announced its 11th annual men’s basketball coaches preseason All-SEC first and second teams Thursday afternoon, with sophomore guard Sindarius Thornwell making the second team.

The Lancaster, S.C. native started all 34 games as a freshman, averaging 13.4 points, 4.1 rebounds 3.0 assists and 1.2 steals in 29.6 minutes per game. After leading all SEC freshmen in scoring and assists in conference games, Thornwell was named to the SEC All-Freshman Team and also earned the Wayman Tisdale National Freshman of the Week on Feb. 18. He led or shared the team lead in scoring 12 times, in rebounding four times, in assists 17 times and in steals 10 times.

Eleven different schools are represented on the two teams with Kentucky having five selections while Florida and LSU each had two selections. In all, 29 different players received votes for the coaches’ teams. The coaches’ preseason All-SEC first and second teams consist of a minimum of eight players on each squad, voted on by the SEC head coaches.

The Gamecocks will be one of 11 teams opening the regular season Friday night, hosting North Florida at 7 p.m.
