COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina guard/forward A’ja Wilson picked up her first college national award with the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) selected her for its first ever Women’s National Freshman of the Week award today. The reigning two-time SEC Freshman of the Week helped power the Gamecocks to three wins last week, including their first top-10 road win since February 2012.

The team’s top scorer last week netted 14.3 points per game over the three outings. With double-figure points in each contest, she stretched her streak to seven in dramatic fashion with her putback with two seconds remaining at No. 9/8 Duke delivered the win and put her in double figures for the game. She was the top scorer and rebounder in the week’s first win, against NC Central, then set three career highs – field goals, blocks and steals – in a win over Charlotte.

For the season, Wilson is 13th in the SEC with 13.3 points per game, shooting 50.0 percent from the field. She is second on the Gamecocks in rebounding with 6.4 per game to rank just outside the SEC’s top 20. Her 10 blocked shots are tied for second on the team, and she is third in steals with 15.

The Gamecocks play their final non-conference home game on Sun., Dec. 14, at noon against Savannah State.
