COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced on Monday that South Carolina will play St. John’s as part of the organization’s Hall of Fame Shootout on Tuesday, Dec. 22, at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. Marist and Brown will also play each other as part of the event.
“We are extremely excited about the opportunity to play a legendary program like St. John’s, who is being led by a Hall of Famer in Chris Mullin,” Gamecock head coach Frank Martin said. “Gamecock history in the New York area is something that we continue to embrace and want to build on. The Northeast is an area where we recruit and a tremendous number of our alums reside. With the Mohegan Sun and the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame affording us the opportunity to play in this pocket of the country, coupled with an opponent like St. John’s, it is a win-win for South Carolina.”
The meeting will be the fifth all-time between the Gamecocks and Red Storm, and the first since an 89-65 St. John’s win in Queens on Nov. 29, 2012. The Red Storm holds a 4-0 upperhand in the all-time series.
Below is the series breakdown between the two schools:
Dec. 30, 1972 (Holiday Festival Tournament, New York, N.Y.), St. John’s win, 86-79
Dec. 27, 1974 (ECAC Ocean State Classic, Providence, R.I.), St. John’s win, 78-77 (OT)
Dec. 27, 1975 (ECAC Holiday Festival Tournament, New York, N.Y.), St. John’s win, 71-59
Nov. 29, 2012 (SEC/Big East Challenge, Queens, N.Y.), St. John’s win, 89-65
Tickets for the event go on sale Friday, Sept. 11, at the Mohegan Sun box office, or online via Ticketmaster. Game times and television details will be released at a later date.
