COLUMBIA, S.C. – The South Carolina women’s cross country team will hit the road for the first time in the young 2015 season, traveling up to Rock Hill for the Winthrop Adidas Invitational. It will be another opportunity for the Gamecocks to test out their depth against regional rivals.

After the men’s 8K race at 9 a.m. the Gamecocks will face off with 19 other schools in the women’s 5K. The race will be scored by classifications, with the Gold race scoring the Division I teams and the Garnet race for all others.

For Division I opponents, Carolina is projected to face Charleston Southern, USC Upstate and host Winthrop, but the race to watch will be against Appalachian State. The Mountaineers enter the weekend ranked 12th in USTFCCCA’s weekly Southeast regional rankings and return four of their top five finishers from the regional championship last season. In their first season in the Sun Belt Conference, the Mountaineers finished second overall at the championship meet and 13th at regionals.

In order to fight their way back into the regional rankings, the Gamecocks will need to run well at Winthrop and try to take down their second ranked opponent in as many races. To open the season, Carolina edged out Coastal Carolina at the Carolina Challenge, and now the Chanticleers are ranked tenth overall in the latest regional poll.
