Gamecock junior Amelia Vernon was named SEC Equitation on the Flat Rider of the Month for September, it was announced Wednesday by the league office.
COLUMBIA, S.C. – University of South Carolina junior Amelia Vernon has been named SEC Rider of the Month for September, it was announced Wednesday by the league office.
Vernon is the tenth Gamecock rider all-time to earn SEC Rider of the Month honors. She is just the second Gamecock rider to earn the conference award in equitation on the flat, joining Samantha Kraus who previously won it in October 2014. Vernon also becomes the first Canadian-born Gamecock to be named SEC Rider of the Month.
Vernon went 1-0 for the Gamecocks during the month of September. She made her competition debut for South Carolina on Sept. 25, as the Gamecocks defeated South Dakota State, 9-7. She won her first career point and first MVP, knocking off her South Dakota State opponent, 86-83, as part of a 5-0 sweep for the Gamecocks.
The Gamecocks begin SEC play on Friday, when Carolina hosts Auburn at 2 p.m. in Blythewood.
