ORLANDO, Fla. — The South Carolina men’s golf team continued play at the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational on Monday, posting a 22-over (310) in the tournament’s second round at the Isleworth Country Club in Orlando, Fla. The Gamecocks stand in a tie for ninth place with a score of 18-over (594) for the tournament.
Senior Will Starke and freshman Scott Stevens both shot a 4-over (76) in round two. Starke, who was one of three Gamecocks to card a round under par on Sunday, made the turn at 2-over (38) and registered a birdie on his final hole of the day on the par-3 18th. The Chapin, S.C. native stands in a tie for 19th place with a two-day total of 147 (3-over).
Stevens recorded four bogeys on the front nine before posting an even (36) over his final nine holes. His lone birdie of the day came on the par-4 10th, and the freshman will head into the final round in a tie for 49th place with a score of 8-over for the tournament.
Senior Matt NeSmith (T-24, 4-over) fired a 7-over (79) on Monday following an up-and-down second round. He tallied a team-best five birdies to go along with seven bogeys and a quadruple-bogey on the par-3 11th.
Keenan Huskey also turned in a second-round score of 79. He totaled four birdies on his day, and the Gamecock sophomore stands in a tie for 36th place with two-day score of 150 (6-over). Redshirt senior Sean Kelly carded a 9-over (81) in the second round and will head into Tuesday in a tie for 60th (11-over).
California (7-under) maintained its spot atop the leaderboard after firing a 2-over (290) on Monday, while Illinois (2-over) and Arizona State (3-over) round out the top three. Florida’s 1-over (289) performance marked the low round of the day.
Quoting Coach Bill McDonald
“We really struggled today in the wind, and it was just a bad day overall. Most of our guys didn’t get off to a very good start and things sort of snowballed from there. We need to come out tomorrow and post a solid round.”
Round Changer
After making the turn at 4-over (40), Stevens opened the back nine with a birdie on No. 10 and registered just one bogey over his last nine holes.
Notable
- Monday’s second round saw no team scores under par from the 15 participating schools. Five schools finished under par in Sunday’s opening round.
- South Carolina’s 31 birdies through two rounds are good for the fifth-best mark in the field.
- NeSmith’s nine birdies this week lead the Gamecocks and rank fourth overall in the tournament.
- Stevens’ par three scoring average (2.75) is the third-lowest mark through two rounds of the event.
