COLUMBIA, S.C. – Three South Carolina soccer students, two males and one female, earned spots on the CoSIDA Academic All-District 4 Teams, the organization announced today. Ive Burnett and Jeffrey Torda made the men’s squad, while Chelsea Drennan garnered recognition on the women’s side.
Torda makes his second appearance on the team, after making the list last year. Tied for the team lead with three game-winning goals, the Colleyville, Texas, senior ranks third on the team with four goals and nine points. His game-winner against Georgia Southern made the Sportscenter Top-10 Plays on Aug. 31, as he nailed a scissor kick for the score in the victory.
Burnett earns his first spot on the team. Starting every game of his Gamecock career as a defender at left back, he’s helped the Gamecocks to eight wins and two shutouts this year. The Brandon, Miss., junior has played all but 32 minutes this season for South Carolina. In his career, he has posted four goals while playing 4,890 career minutes.
Drennan also makes her first appearance on CoSIDA’s Academic All-District rolls. The junior midfielder from Anderson, S.C., stands second in the Southeastern Conference with eight assists on the season. She’s now second in school history with 27 career helpers, six shy of the record. The junior majors in pharmacy.
For the Gamecock men, it’s the third-consecutive year multiple students earned the honor, while Torda becomes the seventh Gamecock men’s soccer student to gain the honor at least twice. Drennan is the 16th Gamecock woman honored with the distinction, gaining the 24th certificate for the program started in 1996.
To be eligible for the award, a student must be at least a sophomore both academically and athletically and have a 3.30 cumulative grade point average. All the district winners move onto the national ballot, with the results of that vote set to be announced on Tues., Nov. 24.
