COLUMBIA, S.C. ââ’¬” South Carolina women’s basketball redshirt-freshman guard Doniyah Cliney underwent successful surgery to repair an injury to her right hand suffered in practice this week. She is expected to be out for several weeks.
After practicing with the Gamecocks since January 2015, Cliney was ready to see game action this season. Coming out of Malcolm X Shabazz High School in Newark, N.J., she was the 13th-ranked guard in the 2014 class according to ProspectNation.com. Amassing over 1,000 career points, Cliney averaged 13.4 points on 48 percent shooting, including 39 percent from 3-point range as a senior. She helped her team to back-to-back state titles in 2013 and 2014.
The Gamecocks are set to play in Colonial Life Arena for the first time this season, hosting Newberry in an exhibition game tonight at 7 p.m. Admission is free. The 2015-16 season officially gets underway for No. 2/2 South Carolina on Fri., Nov. 13, at 7 p.m. against No. 6/10 Ohio State.
