LAHAINA, MAUI, Hawaii – Led by sophomore Keenan Huskey, the South Carolina men’s golf team wrapped up its fall season with a top-five finish at the Ka’anapali Collegiate Invitational on Sunday at the Ka’anapali Golf Course. The Gamecocks fired a final-round 4-over (288) on their way to a fifth-place finish (+12, 864) in the 54-hole event.
Huskey (6th, -3) earned his second-straight top-10 finish following an even (71) in Sunday’s third round. He opened with birdies on two of his first three holes and made the turn at 1-under (33). Two more birdies on holes No. 13 and 14 pushed him to 3-under on his day before he concluded his round with a double-bogey on his final hole, the par-4 third.
Senior Matt NeSmith also carded an even (71) in the final round, as the North Augusta, S.C., native finished the tournament in a tie for 36th (+7, 220). He once again turned in a steady round that included 14 pars and birdies on No. 6, 11 and 16.
Will Starke (+7, 220) marked the other South Carolina golfer to earn a 36th-place finish after he posted a 6-over (77) on Sunday. The senior registered three birdies on his round, tallying his final one on the par-3 15th.
Scott Stevens finished in a tie for 44th (+8, 221), while fellow freshman Will Miles registered a 49th-place finish after totaling a score of 222 (+9). Stevens notched three birdies in the final round (+5, 76) before suffering a double-bogey on the par-3 second. Miles posted his low round of the week following two birdies and an eagle on the par-5 ninth.
Oklahoma captured first-place honors, finishing with a score of 837 (-15). Georgia marked the other school to post a three-day total under par (849, -3), as it settled for second place ahead of North Carolina State (862, +10). Zach Healy of the Bull Dogs grabbed medalist honors with a total score of 8-under (205).
Quoting Coach Bill McDonald
“Overall it was a frustrating week in that we just didn’t get everyone playing well at the same time. Keenan really played well again and his performance over the past two events has carried the team. The fall season has been great for our younger players’ development, and I think we are all excited about what this team can accomplish in the spring.”
Round Changer
Keenan Huskey’s back-to-back birdies on holes No. 13 and 14 helped keep the Gamecocks in the top five down the stretch of the final round. He led South Carolina in birdies for the second-straight tournament.
Notable
- The Gamecocks closed their fall slate with back-to-back top-five finishes. South Carolina boasted three top-five finishes in the fall, including a win at last month’s Camden Collegiate Invitational.
- Huskey’s even (71) on Sunday snapped his steak of five straight rounds of competition in which he finished under par.
- Huskey boasted two top-10 finishes this fall for the Gamecocks. His best finish prior to this season was a tie for 16th at the Bayou City Collegiate Championship earlier this year.
- South Carolina finished third in the field this week in par 5 scoring, sporting an average of 4.78.
- Senior Matt NeSmith’s 41 pars throughout the tournament matched Cal State Northridge’s Felix Mory for the most among individuals.
