BIRMINGHAM, ALA. – The SEC announced its annual Community Service Team for volleyball Wednesday morning, and senior Sarah Blomgren has been selected to represent South Carolina. The Community Service Team highlights an athlete from each school who gives back to their community in superior service efforts.
Sarah spent four weeks this past summer with the International Student Volunteer organization in Costa Rica, working in community development and ecosystem preservation. She helped pave rural roads to help assist farmers transport their goods, and also went out to the local schools to tutor the children in English.
She worked locally after the flooding, working with the team to pack bottled water and non-perishable food for Columbia residents hit the hardest by the disaster. Blomgren also volunteered a number of times at Christopher Towers Senior Living Facility, visiting with the residents there.
She has helped with the athletic department’s Bikes for Kids race event, working with registration and out on the course, and has also helped run post-match volleyball clinics for young children. Other off-the-court accolades for her include being named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll for each of her first three seasons at South Carolina.
The conference offers a community service team in each of its 21 sponsored sports. Here is the full roster for the 12th-annual women’s volleyball Community Service Team:
