Middlesbrough Release

COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina men’s soccer alum Brad Guzan has signed a two-year deal with Middlesbrough FC of the English Premier League, the club announced Friday.

Guzan moves to Middlesbrough following an eight-year stint at Aston Villa (2008-16), who was recently relegated from the Premier League. The 31-year-old made 34 appearances for Aston Villa last season and 171 appearances overall. He will compete with former Barcelona and Manchester United keeper Victor Valdes for the No. 1 goalkeeper spot.

The Homer Glen, Ill., native recently competed for the United States Men’s National Team in the Copa America Centenario, helping the USMNT reach the semifinals of the event.

Guzan’s professional experience also includes four years with Chivas USA of MLS, where he was named MLS Goalkeeper of the Year in 2007. The second-overall pick of the 2005 MLS SuperDraft earned 79 appearances for the club before joining Aston Villa.
