COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina women’s golf, in partnership with Long Cove Club and country music star Darius Rucker, released the sixth annual Darius Rucker Intercollegiate field, announcing 17 participants for next spring’s tournament. The event will be held March 3-5 at Long Cove Club’s nationally acclaimed golf course in Hilton Head Island.
The 54-hole tournament will again play host to the top teams in collegiate women’s golf. Nine of Golfstat’s final top-15 teams from last season will be in action, including 2016 tournament champions Alabama. Other notable teams include 2016 NCAA Championship participants Arkansas, Duke, Furman, Georgia, North Carolina, Oklahoma State, Tennessee and Virginia. The entire 17-team field can be found below.
As has become tradition, the event will kick off with a Darius Rucker concert at the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina. The concert will be a private event for players, coaches, sponsors and Long Cove Club residents.
“I’m so proud of what the tournament has become over the last five years,” South Carolina women’s golf coach Kalen Anderson said. “We are so appreciative of Darius and Long Cove for all of their efforts in making our event first class and the best in the country.”
Approximately 1,500 spectators and over 100 Long Cove volunteers were on hand to watch the Crimson Tide win the three-day tournament this past spring.
“We are once again extremely excited to host what has quickly become one of the nation’s premier women’s intercollegiate golf tournaments,” Long Cove Director of Golf Bob Patton said.
The idea to pair the unique combination of golf and music came from South Carolina women’s golf associate head coach Puggy Blackmon. Blackmon approached Rucker five years ago about the idea, and the musician and South Carolina alumnus immediately showed interest in creating the annual golf tournament.
“An invitation to the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate has become the ‘crown jewel’ in scheduling,” Blackmon said. “The experience for players and coaches is unparalleled.”
The Gamecocks open their 2016-17 campaign next month at the ANNIKA Intercollegiate. The 54-hole event takes place Sept. 25-27, and South Carolina’s spring schedule will be released later this fall.
