Men's Soccer Travels To College of Charleston Sunday In Final Exhibition

Aug. 19, 2016

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The 24th-ranked South Carolina men’s soccer team travels to instate rival College of Charleston on Sunday evening in the final exhibition tune-up of the 2016 campaign. The Gamecocks look to build following a 3-2 victory versus Winthrop in exhibition play on Thursday at Stone Stadium.

Sunday’s match marks the third of three exhibition games to begin the 2016 season for Carolina. The Gamecocks battled No. 8 North Carolina to a 1-1 tie on Aug. 15, before the winning result against the Eagles on Thursday. Freshman Luca Mayr got the scoring started in the 13th minute versus Winthrop off a feed from senior Kevin Walker, finding the far post from the right side. Twelve minutes later Koty Millard found the back of the net, also off a pass from Walker, to give the Gamecocks a 2-0 lead. Senior Danny Deakin closed out the Gamecock soring, launching a free kick just out of reach of the Eagle goaltender into the top left corner.

South Carolina, which returns eight starters, enters the 2016 season after advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament last fall. Head coach Mark Berson, the winningest active coach in NCAA Division I men’s soccer, led the Gamecocks to a third place finish in Conference USA last season, including an unblemished home record (8-0-2).

College of Charleston comes off a 7-8-2 2015 season, their best mark since joining the Colonial Athletic Association in 2013. For the first time in school history, it qualified for the CAA Tournament. Charleston, led by head coach Ralph Lundy in his 30th year, opened exhibition play with a 2-1 victory over North Florida on Aug. 14, before traveling to Queens (Charlotte) for an exhibition on Thursday evening.
