CAMDEN, S.C. — South Carolina leads the Camden Collegiate Invitational after 36 holes, posting a first round score of 287 (+7) and a second round score of 279 (-1) on Saturday at the Camden Country Club. The Gamecocks sit at 566 (+6) with a four shot lead on James Madison (+10). Junior Keenan Huskey leads the individual standings at 7-under after shooting a first round 69 (-1) and a second round 64 (-6).

Huskey, the team captain, tied an 18-hole career-low with his second round 64. Huskey, HREF=”http://www.gamecocksonline.com/sports/m-golf/mtt/matt_nesmith_813937.html”>Matt NeSmith and Kyle Thompson are the only juniors in school history to shoot 64. The Greenville, S.C., native recorded four birdies and an eagle in the second round Saturday.

Scott Stevens is tied for eighth in the individual standings after shooting 144 (+4) in the first two rounds. The Chattanooga, Tenn., native fired a first round 70 (E) and a second round 74 (+4)

Junior Ben Dietrich is tied for 12th a 5-over after shooting 145 Saturday. Dietrich shot a 76 (+6) in the first round but bounced back in a big way with a second round 69 (-1).

Sophomore Ryan Stachler sits tied for 12th with Dietrich ater two steady rounds. Stachler shot 72 (+2) in the morning and and 73 (+3) in the afternoon.

Junior Alex Handy, who made is season debut today, is tied for 46th after recording a day one score of 153 (+13). Handy shot 80 (+10) in round one, but was able to bounce back like Dietrich in round two with a 73 (+3).

Sophomore Will Miles, playing individually, is alone in fifth place after shooting 141 (+1). Miles tallied a first round 69 (-1) and a second round 72 (+2).

Highly-touted true freshman Caleb Proveaux made his South Carolina debut today. Proveaux tied for 41st after shooting 74 (+4) in the morning and 78 (+8) in the afternoon.

“Great round from Keenan this afternoon. The team overall was pretty solid. I’m really, really proud of Alex and Ben for rebounding after poor first rounds. The greens were extremely firm and unpredictable today.”

Round Changer

Keenan Huskey has played six rounds under-par in 2016, which leads the team. He’s the defending individual champion at the Camden Collegiate Invitational. Huskey shot five-under last year to take medalist honors.

Notable

  • The Gamecocks lead the field in par-4 scoring average (4.18) and par-5 scoring average (4.77).
  • Carolina leads the field in pars with 121 and is tied for third in the field with 22 birdies.

South Carolina will travel 4,623 miles west to wrap-up its fall season at the Ka’anapali Collegiate in Lahaina, Hawaii. The three-day event, hosted by the University of Hawaii, runs from Nov. 4-6 and will be played at the Royal Kaanapali Course.
