In anticipation of Hurricane Matthew, the University of South Carolina’s equestrian and volleyball matches versus the University of Georgia, scheduled for Friday, Oct. 7, have been postponed. A decision regarding Saturday’s football game against Georgia will be made later this week in consultation with state and local officials.

In alignment with Richland County Government, the University of South Carolina’s Columbia campus will be closed Wednesday, Oct. 5 and all classes are cancelled. At this time we anticipate being closed with all classes cancelled on Thursday, Oct. 6 and Friday, Oct. 7.

Only essential personnel should report to campus Wednesday, Oct. 5. It is expected that only essential personnel will report on Thursday, Oct. 6 and Friday, Oct. 7.

As a state agency, the University follows the delay and closing determinations of Richland County Government. University officials are consulting with state and local officials as we continue to assess the situation for the rest of the week as the track of Hurricane Matthew becomes more defined. If the status of Richland County Government changes we will advise the USC community accordingly.

The University of South Carolina is encouraging students, faculty and staff to stay at home and stay off the roads as the evacuation of the state’s coastal region proceeds. Always obey all emergency personnel, signs, etc. Please take reasonable steps to ensure your safety and the safety of your family. At this time, the Columbia area is not included in the evacuation order and we do not anticipate a need for students to leave.
