Dennis, Mayronne Shine on Day Two of Georgia Tech Invite

ATLANTA – The Carolina men’s tennis team got outstanding performances from Yancy Dennis and Thomas Mayronne on Saturday at the Georgia Tech Invitational. Both Gamecocks picked up two wins in the DII singles draw, setting up a finals match between the two on Sunday at 9:45 a.m.
“Overall, the boys did well today,” said assistant coach Pablo Bellagamba. “Doubles was not up to our standards in terms of the compete level, but they rebounded well in their singles matches. It will be fun to see Yancy and Thomas battle for the title tomorrow.”
Mayronne began the day by earning a hard-fought, three-set victory over Georgia Tech’s Cole Fiegel. Then, in the semifinal, Mayronne took down another Yellow Jacket as he cruised to a 7-5, 6-1 win over Chris Yun. Dennis started his Saturday with a win over Georgia Tech’s Daniel Yun before taking down Cameron Green of Furman in the semifinals.
In the DI doubles draw, Mayronne and Andrew Schafer dropped their match against Georgia’s Robert Loeb and Jan Zielinski, 8-1, their first loss as a doubles team this season. Previously, the duo ran the table at the Ivy-Plus Tournament to capture the doubles crown in the Pagoda draw.
In consolation play, Schafer had a tough opening to the day as he fell to Jose Garcia of Florida State. In his second match, Schafer earned a win by walkover over Tennessee’s Srdjan Jakovljevic. He will play his final singles match on the weekend at 9:45 a.m. Sunday against Loeb of Georgia.
