It all started with a simple idea that South Carolina women’s basketball head coach Dawn Staley had. She has a lot of interactions with coaches all across the country who coach in several different leagues, so her idea was to bring some of those brilliant minds to Columbia, South Carolina, and that was the birth of the Women Empowering the Game coaches’ clinic that was held at Colonial Life Arena on Sunday, Oct. 30.
Three WNBA coaches made the trip, as well as WNBA President Lisa Borders. The Chicago Sky’s Pokey Chatman, Seattle Storm’s Jenny Boucek and Minnesota Lynx’s Cheryl Reeve were the three head coaches that joined Staley and Borders.
“To see it all come together, and the way it came together, I have to thank our staff, who worked tirelessly, especially this last week to kind of crunch it all together,” Staley said. “Then the WNBA President, Lisa Borders, Jenny Boucek, Pokey Chatman, Cheryl Reeve, all of them, our coaching staff and players, they got a chance to gain a valuable life lesson. They all want to play in the WNBA. I think they see where they’re not far off, but surely there are some things they need to work on.”
