COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina women’s golf newcomer Ana Pelaez has been tabbed the SEC Women’s Freshman Golfer of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday afternoon. The accolade marks the first weekly conference honor for the first-year Gamecock.
Pelaez turned in a historic performance at the Florida State Match-Up (Feb. 10-12), carding the lowest 54-hole mark (208, -8) by a freshman in program history. The three-round total earned her runner-up honors at the event for the Gamecocks, who also placed second with a school-record 847 (-17). Pelaez led the field in Florida with a 3.83 par-4 scoring average, and her 40 pars ranked second among golfers.
The Malaga, Spain, native has competed in three of Carolina’s five tournaments on the season. She posted a 1-under 215 at the 2016 Landfall Tradition, Carolina’s last event of the fall, and her 71.67 stroke average this season leads all freshman and ranks second among Gamecocks.
Pelaez and Carolina resume their spring slate next month when they host the 2017 Darius Rucker Intercollegiate. The 54-hole event, which will again be contested at Long Cove Club, takes place March 3-5 in Hilton Head Island, S.C.
