COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina’s Ana Pelaez has been named the SEC Freshman Golfer of the Week for the second time this spring, the league office announced Wednesday afternoon. The Malaga, Spain, native is one of two golfers to boast a pair of weekly SEC honors this season.
Pelaez continued her steady play this past weekend at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate, finishing tied for ninth with a 54-hole mark of 218 (+5). Her three-round total beat five players ranked in the top 20 by Golfstat and was the third-best showing among freshmen in the 90-person field.
The Gamecock newcomer has grabbed top-15 finishes in each of her last three tournaments, including top-10 showings in both of Carolina’s events this spring. Pelaez earned runner-up honors at the 2017 FSU Match-Up after carding a 208 (-8), the lowest 54-hole score by a freshman in program history. Her 71.92 stroke average this season ranks second on the team, and she has shot par or better in five of her last seven rounds.
Carolina, which moved into the top 10 in the latest Golfstat poll earlier this week, placed fourth at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate to register its fourth-straight top-five finish. The No. 10 Gamecocks resume their spring season at the 2017 Bryan National Collegiate, which gets underway on Fri., March 31, in Greensboro, N.C.
