Carolina Releases APR Scores
May 10, 2017 All of the University of South Carolina’s countable intercollegiate sports posted a multi-year score of 950 or better for the sixth-consecutive year, according to the Academic Progress Rate (APR) statistics that were released today.
“Student-athletes at the University of South Carolina compete to be the best they can be, not only in their respective sports, but in the classroom,” said Athletics Director Ray Tanner. “Our ‘Gamecock Student-Athlete Promise’ outlines the commitment that we make to our student-athletes in their efforts to achieve this greatness. Our APR numbers are a reflection of their efforts as well as those of our coaches and academic support staff.”
Beach volleyball, in its APR debut, joined 13 others sports scoring a perfect single-year score (1000) for the 2015-16 campaign. Additionally, women’s golf made a single-year jump of 71 points from 929 in 2014-15 to 1000. Men’s swimming & diving’s single-year score rose 33 points to 1000 and men’s soccer single-year score rose 31 points to 1000. Men’s tennis, women’s basketball, women’s cross country and volleyball all registered a single-year score of 1000 for the third straight year. The NCAA recognized seven teams for earning multiyear Academic Progress Rates in the top 10 percent of all squads in each sport.
“Daily, our student-athletes strive to compete in the classroom,” said Senior Associate Athletics Director for Academics and Student Development Maria Hickman. “These APR numbers reflect the hard work dedicated to education from our student-athletes and Dodie Academic staff.”
The APR is a point system based on scholarship student-athletes’ eligibility and retention for a pre-determined four-year time period. NCAA sports falling below the established point Multi-Year cutoff (930) may be subject to penalties including scholarship reductions. For purposes of APR reporting, beginning with the 2014-2015 cohort, indoor & outdoor track & field teams are combined. The data released on Wednesday includes the scholarship student-athletes on rosters from the 2012-13, 2013-14, 2014-15, and 2015-16 academic years.
