Men's Tennis Earns ITA Regional Team Community Service Award

May 23, 2017

COLUMBIA, S.C. ââ’¬” South Carolina men’s tennis has been named the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Carolina Region Community Service Team of the Year, the ITA announced Monday. The Gamecocks amassed over 80 hours of community service this season, contributing to the community in a variety of capacities. Last season South Carolina men’s tennis added two honorary members to the team through Team Impact. The team forged a special bond with two local boys diagnosed with a rare form of eye cancer and carried the relationship through to this season. The team has taken the boys to other Gamecock athletics events, attended the boys’ sporting events, took them to the movies, bowling and more. In addition to sponsoring the boys, the team has volunteered at local elementary schools, participated in Week of Giving and on-campus volunteer opportunities. Junior Thomas Mayronne led the team in community service hours and was named to the SEC Men’s Tennis Community Service Team this season. As president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee he led the overall execution of this year’s Carolina vs. Clemson Food Drive, including setting up collection sites and promoting campus wide involvement. The Gamecocks ended the team season with a 21-7 record, the most program wins since the 1997-98 season. A trio of Gamecocks will travel to Athens, Ga., for the NCAA Individual Championships. Gabriel Friedrich will compete in singles and the Gamecocks’ 13th-ranked doubles team of Harrison O’Keefe and Yancy Dennis will play in the doubles event.
