COLUMBIA, S.C. – The University of South Carolina equestrian program is proud to announce that Tyler Petrie will join the Gamecocks in 2017-18. Petrie recently signed a National Letter of Intent to compete collegiately with head coach Boo Major and the three-time national champions.

Petrie is the daughter of Autumn and Scott Petrie. A hunter seat rider out of Medina, Ohio, she is trained by her father and graduated from Gilmour Academy.

“Tyler is another great addition to our team for the fall of 2017,” Major said. “Her dad is her trainer, which is unique, but it’s also a great tool for a rider, because we know she’s ridden a lot of different types of horses. Anytime you have a parent as a trainer, we know as coaches that she’s had the opportunity to ride good horses and bad horses, which is a big benefit for us.”

Petrie brings a lofty list of accomplishments to the Gamecock program next season. She qualified for the Pessoa National Finals every season from 2012-16 and finished in the top-25 in 2015. She also earned a spot at the Maclay National Finals in 2013, 2015 and 2016. She placed 15th at the North American Junior Equitation Championships in 2016 and was a five-time winner of the Ohio Professional Horseman’s Association Year End Championship.

“Tyler has quite a lot of mileage, both in the junior hunters and the equitation arena,” Major added. “I think she’s going to be able to help us a lot. We’re looking forward to having her join us, and we think she’s going to have an immediate impact for us both on the flat and over fences.”
