Stevens Qualifies for U.S. Amateur in California

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — Gamecock men’s golf standout Scott Stevens qualified for the 2017 U.S. Amateur on Monday at Benvenue Country Club Sectional Qualifying after tying for medalist honors. He shot 67 (-5) in the opening round and 69 (-3) for a total score of 136 (-8) to punch his ticket to California.

Stevens shared co-medalist honors with Australia’s Dylan Perry, who is ranked 37th in the latest World Amateur Golf Rankings (WAGR). The Chattanooga, Tenn., native will compete Aug. 14-20 at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif. for this year’s championship. Bel-Air Country Club in Los Angeles will co-host the stroke play portion of the tournament.

Player’s will battle it out for two rounds of stroke play with the top half of the field advancing to the round of 64 of match play. FS1 and FOX will be providing TV coverage of match play. Click here for the full TV schedule.

Stevens followed up a rock solid freshman campaign with a stellar sophomore campaign in 2016-17 for Carolina in which he was named PING All-Southeast Region and Second Team All-SEC. His 71.26 18-hole scoring average ranked 44th in the country and was the lowest scoring average by a sophomore in program history, surpassing PGA player Wesley Bryan in the record books. He had three top-five finishes and tied All-American Keenan Huskey for the team lead with six top-10 showings. Stevens earned runner-up medalist honors at the Maui Jim Intercollegiate back in November after carding a 15-under score of 198, the third-lowest 54-hole score in school history.

Teammate Ryan Stachler was the last Gamecock to compete in the event after he earned exemption for qualifying for the 2016 U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club last summer. Prior to Stachler, All-American Matt NeSmith and Caleb Proveaux played in the 2015 U.S. Amateur. NeSmith, who was making his third consecutive appearances at the event, finished T-8th in stroke play. Proveaux, who was still in high school at the time, finished T-14th. Both players were knocked out in the round of 32 of match play.
