Aug. 2, 2017

IRVING, Texas — The South Carolina men’s soccer team took home the Sport Academic Award for men’s soccer in Conference USA the league announced this week. The annual award is given to the team with the highest GPA in their respective sports.

The Gamecocks posted a 3.368 Team GPA for the 2016-17 academic year, marking the eighth straight time with a team GPA of 3.0 or higher. Twenty-three players were named to the C-USA Acadmeic Honor Roll this season and 21 were named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll.

Academic prowess is something head coach Mark Berson and Carolina soccer puts an emphasis on each year. Based on the most recent multiyear NCAA Academic Progress Rates, Gamecock men’s soccer was one of seven teams at South Carolina to earn an NCAA Public Recognition Award for posting scores in the top 10 percent of its sport. The APR is an annual scoreboard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I Sports Teams.

Since joining the league in 2005, this marks the fifth time (2008-09, 09-10, 11-12 and 12-13) the Gamecocks have led C-USA men’s soccer in team GPA.
